Bellevue College Bulldogs: The College Team That Belongs to the Whole Eastside (Bellevue Eastside News)

Every sports town needs a team that a young athlete can realistically grow into, and on the Eastside that team wears Bellevue College blue. The Bulldogs compete as part of Bellevue College, a public college founded in 1966 that is the largest institution in Washington's community and technical colleges system and among the largest colleges in the state. Its campus, in Bellevue's Eastgate area, is close enough that a high school player from the Bellevue School District can picture a future there without picturing a move away from home.

That proximity is the program's meaning. Community college athletics occupy a distinctive place in American sports: rosters mix recent high school graduates, students returning to competition and athletes rebuilding a path toward a four-year program, all while carrying real course loads at an open-access college. A Bulldog season is therefore also an education story, measured in credits completed and transfers earned as much as in anything that happens on a field or court.

Bellevue College's role in the city extends well beyond its teams. Its service area spans the Bellevue, Issaquah, Mercer Island, Skykomish and Snoqualmie Valley school districts, and its students include working adults, recent immigrants, high school students earning college credit and professionals changing careers. When the Bulldogs play, the crowd reflects that breadth — classmates, families and coworkers rather than a narrow alumni base — and the atmosphere is closer to a community gathering than a commercial event.

Late fall is preparation season in college athletics, when winter-sport rosters take shape and fall programs close their books. It is a good moment for Eastside fans to adopt a habit: pick one Bulldogs home date this winter, arrive early, and learn the roster of a team whose players shop, work and study in the same city as the people in the stands. Supporting local sport does not get more literal than that.

Bellevue Eastside News launches its sports coverage with a simple commitment to this level of the game. We will cover the Bulldogs and the district's high schools with the same care as any professional franchise: verified facts, no invented results, and attention to the students behind the uniforms. Big-time sports are available on every screen in America. This — a college gym in Eastgate on a wet November night — is available only here.
